Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
