An Prediction Market Participant Made $Nearly Half a Million on Wagers on Venezuela's Political Shift.
A bettor earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the event.
Sudden Shift in Predictions
Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the end of January increased in the period preceding President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the president had been taken into custody.
A single trader, which registered on the site last month and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32.5K.
It remains unclear. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Odds Fluctuate Before News Break
Market statistics shows that users estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.
However these probabilities had increased to over 10% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the morning of Saturday, suggesting a rapid movement in betting activity right before the social media post was made.
"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a trade based on inside information," stated a financial reform advocate.
A small number of other traders also made tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.
Political Attention Emerges
Politicians are growing concerned.
Proposed legislation introduced on the start of the week aims to prohibit government employees from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.
The Prediction Market Landscape
Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with users able to predict everything from sports to current affairs.
The industry faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.
Trading on insider information is a crime in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting space.
A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
